This week is full of great activities and events. Tuesday night is a great time to take your family out to eat. The East Side PTA is hosting a family dinner night at Willy’s from 5-8pm. All proceeds will go directly to the PTA.

East Side’s last Walk to School Day will take place on Wednesday, May 2^nd. The first 300 walkers/bike riders will receive a FREE 4oz. smoothie from Smoothie King. Also, Kindergarten orientation will begin on Wednesday morning at 8:30am.

Please remember to also give blood this week. East Side will be hosting a Blood Drive on Thursday, May 3^rd from 3-8pm. To schedule a specific time, use the secure link posted on East Side’s homepage. There you will also find links for additional information about the blood drive and the blood donor benefit program. Sign up today!

Art work from this year’s Adventures in Art program and from Mrs. Kaltrieder’s art classes will be displayed throughout the building on Thursday, May 3rd. The last general PTA meeting of the school year will begin at 6:30pm in the cafeteria. After the meeting, parents are encouraged to walk around and look at the displayed art work created by our very own talented student body.

Please don’t forget that Friday, May 4^th will be the last day to return the pre-printed registration forms for the 2012-2013 school year. If this form is not received, your student’s registration for next year is not complete. Also, please send in the $2 donation to cover the costs of mailing end of the year report cards and test results.

Finally, remember to place your school supply orders online at www.schooltoolbox.com. The website will be open until May 25^th. If you are new to the website, please register yourself and enter the school code: 1ESID30062 to pull up the custom packed boxes for East Side. CRCT at East Side

The CRCT is designed to measure how well students acquire the skills and knowledge described in the Georgia Performance Standards and the Quality Core Curriculum. The assessments yield information on academic achievement at the student, class, school, system and state levels. The information helps gauge the quality of education throughout Georgia.The test can also create quite a bit of anxiety for students and parents.

The Georgia Department of Education provides several tips for parents to help their children, such as making sure their child gets plenty of sleep, a good breakfast, to school on time with the proper materials and a big hug.

Walk to School Day

Blood Drive

The East Side Elementary Blood Drive will take place on Thursday, May 3rd from 3-8pm. Summer months are particularly difficult on the community blood supply, so please reserve your time to donate today. To schedule a specific time, use the secure link posted on East Side’s homepage. There you will also find links for additional information about the blood drive and the blood donor benefit program. Sign up today!

This Friday, March 23^rd wear your favorite funny slippers or silly socks and donate a dollar to support Relay For Life.

Also on Friday, Dodgen Middle School will hold an informal meeting in the cafe at 9:30am to answer questions and share news. All current Dodgen parents and rising 6^th grade parents are encouraged to attend. If you have any questions, please contact co-president@dodgenptsa.org.

Lastly, make sure to check out the ESE Lost and Found before Spring Break. There are many lost items that need to be claimed. The Lost and Found Room is located along the Media Center/Gym hallway. Anything left behind at the close of school on March 30^th will be donated to charity. Please contact Michele Reale at michelereale@att.net with any questions.

International Festival

The International Festival will be held on Saturday, March 24^th from 5-8pm. Enjoy an evening full of amazing performances, great food, and cultural learning. Forms have been sent home with your students so don’t delay and order your tickets today!

Don’t forget to wear your favorite hat and bring in a dollar on Friday, March 9^th to support Relay for Life. This week is also Clean Commute Week. Pick your favorite activity, such as bus riding, biking, walking, or carpooling, and help keep our air clean.

Congratulations to all the winners of this year’s Honoring Our Heroes Essay Contest. Three students representing East Side will attend a reception on March 27^th at JJ Daniell Middle School. We also extend a big congrats to the East Side Elementary Chess team who competed in the Southern Metro Atlanta Regional. Both of our teams will move on to compete at the State Tournament on March 17^th. Way to go East Side!!

Box Tops and Fairs

The Box Tops Collection Contest will end this Friday, Feb. 24^th. Earn great prizes while helping our wonderful school! East Side receives 10 cents for every box top collected. It’s easy to donate. Just clip the box top, count 25 or 50 per baggie, and clearly label the baggie with the number of box tops, the student’s name, teacher and grade. The drop off box is located in the study room next door to the Tiger’s Cage. The Shopping Reward Committee is looking for volunteers to help count/tally all of the box top submissions. If you are interested in helping, please contact shoppingrewards@ eastsideelementary.com.

East Side Elementary Science Fair – Registration Deadline has been extended. The PTA Science Committee has extended the registration deadline to sign up for this year’s Science Fair. Register for the 7th Annual East Side Science Fair online with our Science Fair Link or fill out the form sent home last month and return it by Monday, March 5th. The Science Fair is Thursday, March 15th and set-up for the projects is Wednesday, March 14th from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. All students K-5 are encouraged to participate in this fun-filled event. If you have any questions about the Science Fair, please contact science@eastsideelementary.com.

Finally, mark your calendars for Tuesday, Feb. 28^th from 6-7:30pm for the Exceptional Expo-A Resource Fair. Come meet a variety of professionals, including psychologists, therapists, educational consultants, tutors, and educational advocates who can help your child succeed in life! Movie Night

The East Side PE Movie Night will take place this Friday, February 10^th from 6-9pm. All money raised from this event will go directly to the American Heart Association as part of the ESPE Jump Rope For Heart fundraiser (see below). The cost is $20 per child. Payment is due at drop off at the gym at 6:00pm. Enjoy a few hours off while your children watch a movie with their friends. Food, drinks, and other fun activities will be provided. Parents will return at 9:00pm for pick up. See you at the movies!

The annual Jump Rope For Heart event will be held during PE classes during the week of Feb. 27-March 2. All students have received their JRFH envelopes. Twist and Shout

Get ready for the 2012 East Side Family Sock Hop! This great event will take place on Saturday, Feb. 4^th. Volunteers are needed for setup, cleanup, food and soda donations, and to work various shifts during the event. If you would like to volunteer, log on to Volunteer Spot or email Kristin Morey at kristinmorey@bellsouth.net.

The second week of East Side Foundation’s IXL Math Marathon has begun. Every class has a new opportunity to win a Pizza Party! Log on to www.ixl.com to participate. The class with the highest average number of problems attempted per student will win. At the end of the two-week math marathon, the top class will win the Grand Prize Trophy and the winning student will receive a $50 gift card to Lakeshore Learning Store. Keep up the great work!

Hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday break. There are a few meetings this week to help you get back into the school spirit. The only planning meeting for East Side’s Family Sock Hop is this Thursday, January 12^th at 7 pm. The planning committee needs help with wristband sales, decorations, gift baskets, signs, and much much more! If you have any questions, please contact Beth O’Neal at bethandlee @bellsouth.net.

Planet Patrol will be meeting this Thursday, January 12^th in the Science Room at 7:00am to plan the events for the rest of the school year. In addition, the Environmental Ed Committee is looking for more volunteers to help with Recycle Fridays (from 7:25-8:00am). Year End Reminders

The East Side PE Department hosted its 6^th annual Jingle Jog on Saturday, Dec. 3^rd. Over 500 students, parents, and staff participated in collecting over $5,000 to support the East Side PE program. In addition, more than 3 extra-large boxes of toys were collected for Toys for Tots.

The ESPE team would like to thank their Elite sponsor Arrow Exterminators, as well as, their Premier sponsors Keller Williams Realty, Carroll Realty, North Atlanta Soccer Association, Aurora Investment Counsel, Sumskys Consulting, All About Signs and Big Peach Running Company. The inflatables were provided by Monte Carlo Productions and Sports-A-Rama. Warm-ups were led by Marietta Martial Arts. Trophies were donated by Letter Perfect Engraving. Finally, a BIG BIG thank you to Amy DeMoss, who was in charge of coordinating all of the volunteer activities. Thank you to everyone who participated in the Jingle Jog this year in any way. The PE team truly appreciates all of your support!

The Fresh Fruit Friday program is growing! Every 2^nd Friday of the month, additional fruit from Trader Joe’s will be provided. The next time you are shopping at Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods, please give them a great big “thanks” for their support of this awesome program. If you are interested in helping with the shopping or dropping off the fruit, please contact Amy Waldner at kurtamyw@gmail.com.

Don’t forget the Polar Walk to School Day is this Thursday, Dec. 22^nd. There will be tons of great prizes and each walker will receive a raffle ticket to win one of three iTunes gift cards. Also, the last day to register for Junior Great Books is Thursday. The program begins the week of Feb. 6^th and runs through the end of March 30^th. Finally, as you prepare all your holiday favorites don’t forget to save those Box Tops! East Side receives 10 cents for every box top collected. Turn in your box tops now and receive credit for the Box Tops Collection contest coming in February 2012.
