Welcome to the EEC's web page! The Environmental Education Committee exists to:
- Maintain the school's front landscape and the DEAR Garden, which teachers use as an outdoor classroom
- Coordinate & model environmental conservation programs for East Side's community
How do we do this? Our dedicated volunteers:
- Water, weed, mulch, and install plants and structures
- Collect East Side's recyclable paper every Friday morning
- Collect used athletic shoes for Nike's Reuse-a-Shoe program, which turns them into play surfaces
- Collect 20 oz plastic bottles for Terracycle, which packages worm castings as plant food
Not only do these activities model environmental stewardship, many of them raise money for East Side!
2007 Winner of Keep Cobb Beautiful's School Beautification Award
How can YOU help East Side's EEC?
- Join our committee of volunteers!
- Drop off your newspaper, magazines & office paper in the green & red dumpsters behind the school.
- Send your original Pike Nursery receipts to EEC via PTA Mail. Pike Nursery will accept copies of receipts for warranty purposes. The company's Greenback Program will return 7% of submitted receipts in the form of merchandise (plants & supplies).
- Recycle your 20 oz bottles in the marked Terracycle boxes in the front lobby.
- Donate your used athletic shoes (please remove metal parts like cleats & eyelets first) in the collection box in the front lobby. Please note that this is a seasonal project. Dates will be announced in PTA newsletters each school year.
- Buy an engraved brick for your child, family, or favorite East Side teacher or staff. Click here for an order form.
Where can you take your non-paper recyclables?
Below are 3 recycling centers closest to East Side. Please visit each center's web site for a list of what they can or cannot accept.
- SP Recycling has a 24-hour dropoff site at 1450 Field Cir., Marietta GA 30066, near the junction of Cobb Pkwy/US-41 & Bells Ferry Rd.
- Cobb County Transfer Station is open Monday-Saturday (except county holidays) at 1897 County Services Parkway, Marietta, GA 30008.
- Roswell Recycling Center is open every day except holidays at 11570 Maxwell Rd., Alpharetta, GA 30004.
- Keep Cobb Beautiful and Keep Roswell Beautiful accept electronic discards (computers, etc.) daily for a nominal fee. They also host Special Electronic Recycling Days about 3-4 times per year that include several drop-off sites.
- Make your own rain barrels to collect & re-use the water around your home. See Cobb County Water System's web site for instructions . (Note: Plastic garbage cans work in lieu of 50-gallon barrels.)
Thanks for visiting! Questions? Contact the EEC's co-chairs, Marion Richardson or Sandy Pon.
