ADVENTURES IN ART (1,5,6): EDUCATIONAL ENRICHMENT through in-class hands-on art appreciation lessons. Training and all resource materials provided; lead a monthly lesson on famous artists and their works of art. Time commitment: 2 hours preparation and 1 hour of classroom time per month.
APPROPRIATIONS (1): EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT: Committee members meet 3-4 times per year to study and recommend action on teacher's requests for funds from PTA. Time Commitment: 1.5 hours per month for members, additional 5-8 hours in prep time for chair.
ARTS IN EDUCATION (1,3,6): EDUCATIONAL ENRICHMENT with cultural arts programs, such as storytellers, musicians, artists, and dancers. Coordinate cultural arts programming with school Curriculum Committee. Time Commitment: 1-2 hours per month.
BOOK FAIR (2,3,6): EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT of student reading; FUNDRAISING for East Side's Media Center. Help sell new books in Media Center. Time Commitment: varies depending on duties, as little as 2 hours for helpers.
NOTE: WORKING PARENTS – Cashiers needed for Family Night (6:30-8p).
CALENDAR & HANDBOOK (2,3,4): Update student calendar and handbook to be distributed at Tiger Day in the fall. Some experience with Publisher and/or Word helpful. Time commitment: Flexible. Completed over the summer.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH (2,3,4): Help out with needs in the community and teach students to be good citizens. Find opportunities to help those in need in our community with special emphasis on our sister school, Fair Oaks Elementary. Time commitment: Variable.
COMMUNICATIONS (1,3,4): Facilitate communications between parents, students, teachers and the community through a variety of channels. Time commitment: Variable.
COPYCAT COMMITTEE (1,4): Educational support for teachers. Need 3 volunteers per week (M, W, and F) to make copies for the teachers. Copier training is provided. Time commitment: 1-3 hrs/month.
DIRECTORY (2,3,4): Help create and distribute the student directory. Time commitment: Completed in the fall.
EDUCATION & LITERACY (1,3,4,6): EDUCATIONAL ENRICHMENT & SUPPORT by providing programs that supports our school's educational goals The committee may plan its programs, but past programs have included: Holiday reading rewards program (Dec.); PTA “Heroes” essay contest (Feb.); Tune Out TV Week (Feb); Summer reading list. Time commitment: Variable. Much can be accomplished off school property.
ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION (1,4,7): EDUCATIONAL ENRICHMENT by expanding our knowledge of keeping the environment healthy. FUNDRAISING through recycling to pay for Environmental Education programs. Coordinate East Side Grounds Day. Time Commitment: Variable; Friday morning recycling pick-up.
EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN (2,3,4,5) EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT to gifted (Target) or special need (Resource) students. Meet with staff to determine goals and needs. May coordinate program for Disability Awareness Week. Time Commitment: Variable.
FALL FESTIVAL (2, 3,4,7): TEAM-BUILDING by bringing the entire East Side community together for a day of fun. 7 sub-committees: food court, ticket sales, entertainment, games, advertising (bulletin boards, newsletters, morning announcements, web-site), decorations, and volunteers. Time Commitment: Varies depending on duties. Decorate/set-up: flexible hours, 1-2 hours to help set up games/decorate, run a game, serve food or help clean up.
FIFTH GRADE FINALE (2,3,4): A small group of fifth grade parents will meet once a month to plan the fifth grade finale held in May. Finale will be held off school grounds and much of planning can be done via email. Time commitment: Small at first, gradually growing toward May.
FINANCIAL LITERACY (2,3,4): EDUATIONAL ENRICHMENT. Promote students' financial responsibility through Washington Mutual Savings. Committee members take turns supporting the weekly School Savings program (Fridays mornings, 7:30-9:30 a.m.), and Junior Achievement. Time commitment: 1-2 hours/month.
FRONT OFFICE ASSISTANTS (1): EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT as part of what keeps Team East Side going. Need 2 volunteers per school day for a 2-1/2 hour shift (7:45-10:30a or 11:30a-2:00p). Time commitment: 1 shift/month on average
FUNDRAISER (2,4): FUNDRAISING providing financial support of East Side PTA with sales of a variety of items. Collect and tally orders in mornings; unload trucks to stage and organize by class; help distribute orders during afternoons. Time Commitment: Flexible shifts during fundraising season in fall.
HEALTH & NUTRITION (1,3,5,7): EDUCATIONAL ENRICHMENT of nutrition and other health issues. Arrange flu shot program for teachers, students and families. Other ideas include: a health fair; articles addressing health issues; nutritional education program. Time commitment: Variable– great for working parents.
HOLIDAY BASKETS (2,4): Collect student donations; fill and deliver holiday baskets for East Side staff to say thanks for all they do! Time commitment: A few hours one morning.
HOSPITALITY (1): TEAM-BUILDING & EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT providing hospitality for special school events. Coordinate East Side Staff Welcome Back Luncheon; Teacher Appreciation Luncheon, provide snacks and drinks for other small events. Time Commitment: 2-3 hours for luncheons; 1 hour for small events.
JR. GREAT BOOKS (2,6): EDUCATIONAL ENRICHMENT through an award-winning after-school reading program. Training and all materials provided. lead group discussion/activities for one story per week. Time Commitment: 2.5 hours in January and February, 2.5 hours training in December.
JR. WRITERS (1,6): New after-school program designed to instruct fourth and fifth graders on the process of writing. Volunteers will help a small group of students learn to write and publish articles, poems or essays. Time commitment: 4-6 hours per month.
LEGISLATION AND ADVOCACY (1,3,4): Very flexible. Help keep parents aware and promote the position of the PTA in any legislative issues that could affect East Side students/staff. Time Commitment: Variable.
LITERACY LAB (1, 4, 6): EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT maintaining the literacy library for teachers. This library contains Guided Reading leveled books for teachers to check out as needed. Time Commitment: 1-2 hours per month.
MEMORY BOOK (1): EDUCATIONAL ENRICHMENT working with students and yearbook vendors to produce East Side yearbook. Time Commitment: as little as 1 hour each month or more if you wish
MEDIA CENTER/RESOURCE LAB (1,6): EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT - Help Media Specialist by shelving books, checking books in/out, and helping children with book selections. Time Commitment: 2-5 hours per month in flexible shifts.
MEMBERSHIP (2,3,4): Help promote PTA membership at East Side. Membership drive on Tiger Day. Time commitment: 2 hours per month. Usually completed in fall.
NEWSLETTER/TIGER TIMES (1,4,6): Help with production and/or distribution of East Side's weekly newsletter. Time commitment: 1.5-4 hours per week. Some work can be shared.
PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT (1,3,4): Assist with newly created Welcome Committee ; make parents aware of volunteer opportunities at the school. Outreach to encourage participation of parents who might be new to the school system and/or have language/communication barriers. Time Commitment: Variable.
PARTNERS IN EDUCATION (1,3,4): Assist in the development of East Side's Partners in Education; coordinate monthly East Side PTA Night at local area restaurants (funds raised go to Staff Support Fund). Time commitment: 1-2 hours/month.
PTA FUN DAYS (1,4): Help with periodic sports and fun days at a variety of venues including skating at YMCA, rock climbing, Sport-A-Rama and more. Advertise events, check-in kids during the first hour of each session. A portion of the proceeds benefits East Side PTA. Time commitment: Approx. 2 hours/month.
REFLECTIONS (2,4,6): EDUCATIONAL ENRICHMENT - Help with this annual PTA program encouraging original works of photography, visual arts, music, literature, and video production. Time Commitment: Approx. 5 hours in the fall, 1-2 hours in Dec/Jan for awards.
ROOM REPRESENTATIVES (1,4,5): Coordinate parent volunteers for center times, field trips, parties, PTA events (e.g. Sock Hop); organize teacher appreciation gifts from class. Time commitment: Varies by class, but is generally higher in the lower grades. Must be available during school hours.
SCIENCE (1,3,4): Support and promote science education at East Side. Help organize Science Fair and other science related programs throughout the school year. Time Commitment: Variable.
SOCK HOP (2,3,4): Help plan, decorate, or stage this fun event held in the spring. Time commitment: 30 minutes to 5 hours depending on duties; 6 hours for planning meetings.
SPIRITWEAR (2,4): Help design and sell spiritwear during Tiger Day in the fall or other school events as applicable, help deliver special orders. Time Commitment: Flexible.
SUNSHINE MATH (1,3,4,): EDUCATIONAL ENRICHMENT. Help with a valuable 10-week program furthering math skills. Parent Graders are needed to check the students' responses at home once per week. Time Commitment: 1 hour per week.
SUMMER ENRICHMENT (2,3,4,6): EDUCATIONAL ENRICHMENT. Create and promote special summer learning opportunities for the students. Established programs include “Summer Reading”, “Summer Math” and “Summer Writing”. Help with awards picnic early in fall. Time Commitment: Variable.
TIGER'S CAGE (1,3): Assist students in staffing and stocking the school store. Time commitment: Flexible hours! Monday, Tuesday & Thursday mornings (7:40-8:00a).
VARIETY SHOW (2,6): EDUCATIONAL ENRICHMENT with an event that allows students and staff to show off their “talents.” Performers “previews” in January and rehearsals during February. Volunteers are needed to head 6 main areas: advertising, ticket/video sales, opening & closing act, script development, set design, show program. Time commitment: Varies according to duties (minimal to a lot).
WEB-SITE (1,3,4): Help maintain PTA web site. Work with PTA committees in collecting items for posting on the web. Identify new ways to promote web-site hits by East Side community. Time Commitment: A few hours per month.
YOUTH SERVICES (1,3,4): Help organize Red Ribbon Week Activities; research safety issues and distribute educational materials; arrange programs to encourage health and safety. Time commitment: 1-2 hours/month
BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION, CAMPBELLS LABELS AND GROCERY CARDS (Publix & Kroger) (1,3,4): FUNDRAISING – Publix, Kroger, and General Mills donate a portion of your purchase to East Side PTA. Campbells donates goods to the school for collected labels. Use your Publix and Kroger card whenever you shop! Collect box tops from General Mills' products! Collect Campbells' labels! Time commitment: Minimal
